4 Stars New 42LG70 42-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD Review
I purchased the LG 42″, 1080p, 120Hz, TV locally in January and hooked it up myself. The setup was easy and the picture quality was average to poor due to my having the standard Direct-TV service. I ordered the Direct TV HD upgrade receiver and their technicion installed it two days after I ordered and was he was very good/knowledgeable. The HD channels on my new LG looked perfect in color and clarity. This is the way TV should be. One problem with Direct TV in Central Virginia is they do not give you the local channels in HD. So after all my efforts, I had to watch this years Superbowl on Fox in standard digital and the picture was poor. I contacted Direct TV and they said the local channels in my area were not available in HD even thought we can see the HD symbol on all of them. I contacted the local channels and they said Direct TV refuses to connect to their HD signal. This must be some kind of finacial decision where Direct TV deems our market not worthy of the investment but they claim that 88% of their customers get local channels in HD. I asked Direct TV why we were being charged the same as their customers getting local HD when we did not. They did not reply. The solution here is to buy an outdoor HDTV antenna. I just installed mine this weekend and I now get all local channels in HD along with 20 other “FREE” channels. The cable and satelite companies are gouging us with high prices and package deals that encourage you to spend more. If our TV stations continue to add HD free service, the cable/satelite companies may find themselve without customers. I gave the 42LG70 a rating of 4 due to the internal speakers causing vibration and ratling in surround mode.

5 Stars Great LCD
After much researching – and a son-in-law buying 3 different LCDs and ending up with this model, I had to get the same one, as it was much better than the Sony or Samsung models he tried at the same price point.

Love the Auto Sense and how it adjusts the picture as the light changes. Also does great with the Wii and pics from my thumb drive.

5 Stars Very pleased with this tv
I did a lot of research before deciding on this model. It was easy to set up and looked great right out of the box. I have since fined tuned the color settings. We’ve had it for 3 months now and very pleased with it. I especially like the ability to choose different color schemes for different types of programing with just one button on the remote. I also like the fact that standard definition programing looks better on this tv than on others I’ve seen. I can’t speak for the sound as I have it connected to a surround sound system.

5 Stars Trully Fantastic Pic and good sound too!
I bought this set a month ago from Fry’s in CA. It was on sale for $949 and with tax beat all on-line retailers. I did the research and viewed the screens in stores. I live in a small RV and am limited on space and have lots of window light. The Panasonic plasma was my 1st choice but the plasma is a fragile set as you can not lay them down, they aren’t supposed to travel over 5,000′ in elevation and I was also concerned with vibration. So I was considering the Sony 40″ and the Samsung 40″ but the reviews and specs of the LG along with the 2″ of gained viewing space with a fine matte screen attracted me. I also saw the LG 42″ in several 4 and 5 star hotels! They prefer LG because of reliability. I have been watching my old VHS movies from a Sony dual player directly connected to the LG via 3 wire component harness. LG sound is very good! I have read many complaints about the LCD sets having poor sound, well the LG is great! Also I have a Sony 1080i upscale DVD player to watch my standard DVD movies. They look great on this set. Yesterday I installed my new Sony S-350 Blu Ray player and watched “The Dark Knight.” WOW. It is like better than the theater! I could not believe it, even the sound is terrific. Tonight I want to watch a standard DVD movie because this player up scales to 1080P and the reviews indicate standard movies will look as good as a blu ray. I will check this out! Believe me when I tell you there is NOTHING out there that beats the 42LG70’s performance with an excellent matte screen with no reflection! By the way, I am using CAT-2 HDMI cables from the Blu Ray player to the Denon Receiver and from there to the LG. From AMZN seller for under $10 each and that allows 100% transfer of all Blu Ray transfer data! Too Cool!

5 Stars My Window!!!!
This TV is UNREAL, I watch a movie and it looks like im looking over the director’s shoulder. Everyone that stops by is impressed. The only thing that would limit your entertainment experience is the supporting equipment. The TV is Awesome. It looks sharp, it displays nicely, and is affordable. The only cons I had with the TV is the sound wasn’t too loud by the tv itself, but hooked up with a surround system and it is amazing. We are very very very happy with this TV.

5 Stars Bang for Buck Performance knock out!
this tv is great, first off- the remote. its simple, doesn’t have thousand buttons on it- its simple, and easy.

the picture is great if you are watching HD and blu-ray, but if you are watching standard definition, then its best to watch it on your old tv (but since everything is pretty much in HD anyways- be patient).

the color saturation is accurate- meaning- its not to ‘rainbow-ish’( there isn’t an exaggeration of colors, every color is natural )

ex. the tide commercials are bright white, and the road on nascar is black really black, but you can see a clear distinction of color and detail between the road and the tires- (remember they tar the road before its driven on- so the road looks like new) unlike some tv’s **coughs – sam – coughs – sung**

for the price, i couldn’t find a better tv. i bought the tv, 3 year coverage, and hdmi cables (12ft) for under 2,000.

5 Stars Great picture in daylight
Have only used it a few days so far. I’m not a TV freak, so lots of TVs look good to me. When you go in a store, all the pictures look great under ideal conditions. This picture looks sharp and bright in the daytime in a room with many large picture windows, and I haven’t made any adjustments. No problem with viewing it from an angle. Bought with an LG blu-ray to use netflix downloads and have everyting compatible (like remotes). Haven’t set up blu-ray yet.

The picture and sound is great on this tv. This tv has so many options and is easy to use.

1 Star HD picture awesome all others horrible
If you are watching strictly HD then this may satisfy you. However, if you switch to a non-HD channel the picture is worse than my 13″ with rabbit ears. the blacks all blend together and the shadows bleed leaving black blotches. I have gone through every conceivable adjustment and the picture is just not what one would expect.

5 Stars Amazing Image, Good Sound, Great Value
This is one of the most impressive images on a flat screen I have seen We are fortunate enough to own a Panasonic 50 inch Vierra 1080p plasma, a very new Sony 40 LCD 1080p 60 hz, a vizio (50 and 32 1080i) and now this. Connected to a Direct TV HD signal via HDMI it is the most impressive, clear, life like picture of any of the above tvs with similar sources/inputs. It has very good speakers, not great, but better than any other in our house.

Wonderful value. It has a remote of lesser feeling quality, but it works fine.

Great Value. It may need a firmware to update bring it to its best. These are easy to do, simply download the update onto a memory sitck via usb and connect it to the tv via the usb input. Enjoy, I will look at philips first next purchase.

4 Stars Philips 120Hz 47inch TV
The picture quality is definetly 5 stars. I do not have cable or satellite and am in awe of the picture quality I get from the digital stations from my antenna. Watching DVD movies with an HDMI compatible player was phenomenal. If you just need to have the best picture for watching TV, sports, movies this is great.

The reason I gave it four stars.

1. Remote : Very cheapish for the price of the TV. It can not be programmed to run anything but your TV. There are programmable remotes out there for around $35 so this is not the main reason.

2. Switching channels : Using the remote, when you type in the channel you want to go to the numbers on the screen are very small for such a large screen size. Also, when just using the channel up button or down button it takes a little time (<1s) to “get the picture” but the channel does not show up on the screen until the picture does.

3. Menu : Is easy to navigate

4. Output: There is no output of video, so I can not record shows onto a VCR. Also the output for sound is one digital RCA type (outputs great dolby 5.1 from digital broadcast TV), so you better make sure your reciever has this on it for your surround sound system. Mine had it for my DVD player and other components, but not for TV. One plus here is that I can watch the TV, sound comes into my reciever on the DVD setting, and when I put a DVD in to play I do not have to switch the reciever to DVD. That actually is pretty great.

5. Options : This is why I gave it 4 stars. It finds station great and labels them accordingly with the call letters of the station. Bad thing is I want to lable them so I know I am watching NBC, CBS, ABC. You get the picture. I would have loved to name them NBC-1, so I know where my antenna is supposed to point to get these stations. Not a bad minus but my old analog television even had this.

5 Stars Great TV – Totally impressed!
Great TV. The picture is stunning. It is so clear that you almost think you look out of a window. Yesterday I watched Transformers (on HD-DVD) and Wild Hogs (Blu-Ray). I had to do some picture adjustments since with the default configuration (especially the sharpness needs to be changed) the picture looks very grainy in some of the scenes from Transformers.

The build-in speakers from the Philips TV are good but not “incredible”. There are just a few High-End TVs out there with really good build-in speakers (like Bang & Olufsen or Loewe). But most people use their external sound systems anyway.

The remote control looks and feels cheap. Would be nice if Philips invested a bit more in it just to match the positive impression of the TV.

I would say this TV has one of the best price/value you can currently find on the market.

Another TV that might be worth looking at is the new Vizio SV470XVT.

5 Stars Great 120HZ TV so much underrated…
Philips will not produce HDTV any longer for the US and has sold the division to an obscure company that will takeover the production.

This set has created a lot of buzz when it went out because there were a lot of issues. What good about that will you tell? the good thing is that they have fixed the issues (banding, problem with format, auto power off).

One point that has never suffered from any problem was the image quality largely on par with the top brand (even better but i dont want to get flammed by samsung owners).

So this is now a flawless 120hz hdtv with a superb image quality (black are superb). I especially like the image you got using the power saver mode. This version does not have the ambilight ( that i dislike, i have seen many of them in Europe where Philips is a well know brand)

it fits perfectly with a ps3 (yes it does 24p) and the set is beautiful. so buy it when you still can.

3 Stars fair but not the bast
I bought this for $200 at BB to put in my kitchen, after living with 2 other LCD TV’s I’m sorry to say my newest TV is my poorest one. I have the Samsung 22″ 650 model and must say that’s a GREAT TV. The colors on the Sharp are washed out at times, face tone is what I notice the most. For the money I’m going to keep it so understand it’s livable just not the best. Also remember I paid $399 for the Sammy so it all comes out in the wash. The egg timer works and perfect in the Kitchen, it has a magnet so you can stick it on the fridge! I’m starting to see the LED back lighted LCD TV’s, BOY do they look great!!!, keep looking if you can wait because the LED models are brighter and sharper in every way, this TV is on the dark side, much darker then my Samsung.

4 Stars good picture, bad speakers, not worth the kitchen timer
This is a very good small TV. HD looks crisp, sd cable looks about as good as you can hope for. My only problem is that this TV is identical to the LC19sb25u. The only difference is that this one comes with a different stand that has a spot to rest the kitchen timer/clock with simple remote functions. It is a very good timer, and we do find it convenient to have the buttons on the front instead of side, but you can save $30 to $55 if you get the one without.

Edit:[As far as the speakers(a main complaint on the LC19sb25u customer reviews); I did not notice it at first because the problems seem to depend on what is on and the channel, but they are a problem. Sometimes the volume is too low no matter how high you have it. Other times it is loud and distorted. The volume scale has very little change from about 20 to 60(max). My biggest complaint is the bass. It is not there. It is shameful watching something in HD without at least decent sound. Realizing this now I would rate this a three overall(good picture, bad speakers). If you are hooking this up to a sound system then it shouldn't matter to you. But if you are just trying to extend your HD to a small place that a sound system is impractical, such as a kitchen, you need to look elsewhere.]

On a side note, this TV (and no doubt other TVs that can decode QAM signals) was able to get all the regular analog cable channels AND the local HD channels that our cable provider offers over the same cable. I would definitely suggest having the TV automatically find all digital and analog channels, you never know what you might get. This saved us from using an A/B switch with a OTA antenna to get some HD use out of the TV.
